Prospective Plant Parent: Dieffenbachias are the perfect choice for beginners, forgetful plant owners, or people living without curious pets and small children. (See toxicity.)

Difficulty: Difficult to spell, but easy to take care of. (Super easy!)

Lighting: In nature, Dieffenbachias grow on the rainforest floor, so they can survive in varying amounts of indirect light. This plant can tolerate low light, but its growth will slow drastically. The brighter the light, the more growth, and the stronger the variegation. Watch for direct sunlight that can scorch the leaves.

Watering: Dieffenbachias grow best in soil that is not overly damp. Water when the top 1-2” inches of soil are dry. Droopy, limp leaves are usually a sign that the plant needs a drink.

Humidity: Your choice. Native to tropical regions of Central America, Dieffenbachias can survive in normal household humidity, but it would enjoy an occasional misting.

Temperature: These plants grow best in temperatures between 65-85 degrees. If you are comfortable, your plant will be too.

Toxicity: Dieffenbachias are commonly referred to as “Dumbcane” because the sap from the plant can cause tongue swelling and mouth numbness, temporarily causing one to become mute or “dumb.” However, with caution, this plant poses no significant threat, but it is best to keep out of reach if you have little tikes or curious critters running around. Gloves and caution are encouraged when pruning or handling your Dieffenbachia.
